BAMF Review: Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones

This was one of those books that we both felt pretty neutral on because while it had pretty prose with vivid descriptions that transported us into the world, it left us wanting a lot more. This felt over before it really began and had us wishing the pace slowed down so we could savour the story, the relationships, and the world just a bit more. While every story is a copy of a copy of a copy, and WINTERSONG is technically a retelling, this story felt like nothing new. It was too easy to compare this one to others that […]

We both agreed on every aspect of this one (with slight variations) and it was sort of shocking to both of us because usually we have some differences. However, after reading other reviews, it is apparent that most of the people who read this book feel the same way about the book: it has great representation, but not much actually happened. We thought Norah’s stream of thoughts were pretty identical to how people with agoraphobia and other anxiety disorders view the world. We are really glad that more and more authors are starting to write characters who have mental illness and […]

As a disclaimer, both Dani and Jamie are cisgendered and therefore are not experts on lived experiences of transgender persons. Please see other reviews by transgender people about the representation to have a full understanding of whether or not it was positive or negative. This is one of the rare times that we had similar ratings of a book but had opposite reasons for enjoying it. So we are going to break it down by issue and see where we lined up and where we differed so you know where this falls. However, this is a very meh book and not […]

There are some great books coming out next year and we need these titles in our hands. Some of the spotlights include an interview with the author, but all of them include why we are super excited to read this book! In January 2017, we will be reading… Why We Decided To Read This One Jamie: Mental Illness is something that is really important to me. I suffer from a variety of different mental […]

BAMF Review: Clanless by Jennifer Jenkins

We both enjoyed the same parts of this book (Gryphon, Josh and Tess, and expansion of the world) but Dani liked these things more than Jamie, which is why there is a disparity between our ratings. Dani also admits that Gryphon gets two stars automatically from her (which Jamie agrees with because, well, Gryphon). Gryphon had even more depth to him this time around, as he struggled with being ostracized from his community, regaining old friendships, and keeping promises to the people he loves. We agree he had a good character story plot and also he is the best […]
