Where Are They Now? with Kristy Acevedo

At Books Are My Fandom, we love debut authors, but we feel as though once they debut, the book community forgets about them as a whole. Where do the debut authors go once they have debuted? What do they have in store for the future? And thus, “Where Are They Now?” was born: a feature for the previous year’s debuts to continue to stay in the minds of the bookish community! You can see our full list of participating authors here! So let’s meet today’s featured author…

Kristy is currently in Sequel Valley, with CONTRIBUTE, the second book in the Holo duology, releasing in July!

As if Alexandra Lucas’ anxiety disorder isn’t enough, mysterious holograms suddenly appear from the sky, heralding the end of the world. They bring an ultimatum: heed the warning and step through a portal-like vertex to safety, or stay and be destroyed by a comet they say is on a collision course with earth. How’s that for senior year stress?

The holograms, claiming to be humans from the future, bring the promise of safety. But without the ability to verify their story, Alex is forced to consider what is best for her friends, her family, and herself.

To stay or to go. A decision must be made.

With the deadline of the holograms’ prophecy fast approaching, Alex feels as though she is living on a ticking time bomb, until she discovers it is much, much worse.

BAMF: What has been the best part of your debut year?

Kristy Acevedo: Honestly, the best part was the support of my local community and receiving messages from fans about how much they connected with my main character. It’s a strange and beautiful feeling to have something you created in your imagination strike a cord with another person, enough that they reach out to tell you. It’s amazing.

BAMF: What was the most exciting thing that happened to you in your debut year?

Kristy Acevedo: So many wonderful things happened. The most exciting for me was CONSIDER getting nominated as a finalist for the 2017 Philip K. Dick science fiction award. It’s such an honor to be listed.

BAMF: What advice would you give to authors debuting in 2017?

Kristy Acevedo: Enjoy the journey. It’s cliche and so true. The year becomes a blur of ups and downs, and you have to find a way to balance new priorities with personal time.

BAMF: What was the easiest part of writing your main character, Alex? The hardest?

Kristy Acevedo: The easiest part of writing Alex’s character is her language and details she would find important. She has a down-to-earth and contrasting viewpoint where she weighs the consequences, to a fault. I can understand that.

The hardest part has been in Book 2. She’s alone and devastated through parts of the story, and I found it a challenge not to have her give up.

BAMF: Was CONSIDER always planned as a duology?

Kristy Acevedo: Yes, I always saw CONSIDER as a two-book project. I knew from the beginning how book 1 would end, and I only saw one more book in the series. I was asked about a third book, but declined.

BAMF: What can we expect to see more of in CONTRIBUTE?

Kristy Acevedo: Book 2 has much more science fiction since it’s set in the future, rebels, many more friends and conflicts, and some heartbreaking scenes.

BAMF: If you had to choose to give up either cheese or chocolate for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Kristy Acevedo: Noooooooooo! Unfortunately, chocolate. Chocolate is a luxury; cheese is a staple in my house.

I missed hearing about this book last year! And now a sequel is coming so the first book must be really fun to read. I enjoy science fiction.
