Here at BAMF we are always looking to shine the light on authors and their books. And what better way to do so than to hear about a book than from the author themselves? That’s why we have started our Pro Talks Feature where we interview an author about their book(s) and get the down low on characters, plot and anything else they want to share with us about their life as an author! You can find your next great read here.

A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond...
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.
Today’s guest is …
Elise Kova discussing AIR AWAKENS
BAMF: Describe AIR AWAKENS in 10 words or less.
Elise Kova: Library apprentice discovers rare elemental magic and fights for Empire. (That was hard!)
BAMF: What genre do you find yourself writing in most? Is this the same as what you read the most?
Elise Kova: For sure the same. I write primarily in high-fantasy and that’s what I’ve always enjoyed reading. On a personal level, I love it. On a professional level, it’s great for me to see what’s out there on the market and how other people are spinning their tales.
BAMF: What are your ambitions for your writing career?
Elise Kova: I’ve been really, really lucky to have the support of amazing readers and successes that many authors never see in a short span of time. So, at this point, all I really want is to be able to maintain my ability to write full-time and continue to bring stories readers love to life.
BAMF: What was your favourite scene to write in AIR AWAKENS?
Elise Kova: In just the first book I would likely go with the dancing scene (that gets so rudely interrupted) toward the end of the book. In the series overall… Maybe the sandstorm in book two? Because I think that’s one of the first times Vhalla is really stepping up, and it felt epic when I was writing it.
BAMF: What advice would you give to your younger self?
Elise Kova: Don’t try so hard to have all the answers, and don’t be so hard on yourself.
BAMF: What inspired the magic system of the AIR AWAKENS series?
Elise Kova: When I began writing AIR AWAKENS, I wanted to create a sort of “high fantasy lite”. I’ve always loved high fantasy, other worlds, in-depth world building, fictional places that are so rich you can write companion compendiums to go along with them. But, for all the joy I find in that, I’ve also met many people who don’t like high fantasy because it’s (often times) a slow-moving genre that takes a while to get going because of all the world-building. So I wanted to present a world that had depth to it, but was easy to get into for people who may not be used to reading high fantasy books. To that end, I wanted a magic system that was simple to grasp and elemental magic fit the bill. It’s simple enough to say – fire, water, earth, air – and people get the type of magic they can do. Of course, then, I took it further and added affinities of the self and other things. But that want for something fairly easy to grasp was the root of inspiration overall for the magic in AIR AWAKENS.
BAMF: Give us a bit of insight to Vhalla: What makes her special?
Elise Kova: This may be the most difficult question on the list! Vhalla has resonated with people in ways I never expected. I suppose, I can only answer with what makes her special to me… In my eyes, Vhalla goes through a lot, and while she has her flaws and her setbacks, she reaches a point where she rises to the task despite her humble beginnings. Which, I think is a story that most of us fundamentally love – someone unassuming realizes their full potential and finds their own greatness.
